7 Holmes School
Choir members will be traveling to Monroe Jr./Sr. High School to
participate in the OMEA District 13 Elementary Honors Choir. These

dedication to our choir at Holmes School. In order to partipate in the
concert on February 23 conducted by Kelly Ann Westgate, the director
of the Cincinnati Children's Choir, these girls have to learn 6 new songs. They give up lunchtime Monday-Friday to make these songs perfect! At Monroe, they will be joined by some of the best 5th grade singers from the area.

Recycling Contest!!!
|
 |
|
 |
Mr. Short has been the recycling coordinator for the past 5 years.
Have you noticed the yellow and green dumpsters near the parking lot? Two
years ago he was able to get Abitibi Paper Retriever to pick up our paper
products for recycling and receive cash for each ton collected. This is
not only a school function but it is also a community effort to support our
schools. Our school will be challenged to do better than we did last
year. If our school can recycle 15% more than they did from October 2006
through March 2007, your school can win CASH!! Our school will be
assigned a goal for paper recycling for the contest period after the
registration period. If our school can meet or exceed that goal - WE WIN!!!
You can help. Bring your unwanted paper products to the containers any
time and help us exceed our goal and win. All money goes to the Holmes
PTO to help support there programs.
What can go in the containers? Any paper products such as office and
school papers, magazines, catalogs, newspapers, mail and phone books.
Please no cardboard.

Charity Begins at Holmes
|
 |
|
Mr. Harrison's Third Grade Class provided a Charity Carnival at Holmes school as their final project for the Economics Unit in Social Studeies. They invited the third and second grades to attend a Charity Carnival for the Wilmington Humane Society. Mr. Harrison's students decided that they would provide a service instead of making a project. They brought games from home, the class voted and then broke up into groups to decide division of labor responsibilites for each game. Tickets were twenty-five cents. The games took place during noon recess. Mary Jane Johnson from the Wilmington Humane Society came to Holmes and graciously accepted the $268 total. Bow-Wow!
The Holmes Fifth grade GATE class had a bake sale. Students sold cinnamon pretzels and trail mix. The money collected by the students was donated to Savanna Coffman and her family. Savanna is the Clinton Massie student that had a heart transplant in the fall. Our GATE class collected $200. Thanks to all the studednts and families that supported the bake sale!

"Read to a Pet" Program
|
 |
|
 |
Susan Ertel and her certified pet therapy basset hound, Belle, started Holmes “Read to a Pet” program last year. One day a week, Mrs. Ertel and Belle visit Mrs. Belles’ first grade class and individual children read to Belle.
Through Ohio Reads, we have added two additional pet therapy dogs this year. Jo Miller and her Miniture Collie, Scooby, read to Mrs. Carter’s first grade class. Debbie Achtermann and her Newfoundland, Mylo, read to Miss Johnson’s kindergardent class.
The children enjoy the program and look forward to reading to the pets each week
Our three “Read to a Pet” dogs and their owners dressed up for Halloween and visited our school. Pictured above are Jo Miller with Scooby, Debbie Achtermann with Mylo, and Susan Ertel with Belle.

Kids on the Block
|
 |
|
“Kids on the Block” is a disability awareness puppet program performed nation wide. It is sponsored by Region 14-Hopewell Center which is located in Hillsboro, Ohio. The puppet program is performed for third grade students in Adams, Brown, Clinton, Fayette, and Highland Counties.
The focus of the program is to show the students that kids and adults with disabilities are a lot like them and they do not need to be afraid of an individual that has a disability. The puppets also encourage the third graders to get to know people who have disabilities, be their friend, and ask them questions about their disability. There are three different disabilities that are discussed in the “Kids on the Block” program: Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome and Blindness. Teasing and making fun of each other is also discussed.
This program has helped both special needs students and other students learn more about each other which has been a benefit to all concerned. Many new friendships have occurred due to this wonderful program.
