SAFETY PROTOCOLS FOR TRANSPORTATION

Communication with parents is essential.  For students to return to the classroom safely using school transportation, parents will need to have an active role.

**NEW** Bus Stop Limitations

In order to reduce the risk of commingling students, students will only be permitted one bus stop to be picked up and dropped off 5 days a week. The only transportation change able to be made at the school is for the student to be picked up by a parent/guardian.

Face Coverings (Mask/Shield)

WCS requires that all students and staff wear a face covering (i.e. mask or shield) on the school bus (unless there is a medical reason why they cannot wear a mask and a doctor’s note is on file).  Students who do not have a face covering will be given a disposable mask to wear.  Mask must cover nose & mouth.

Bus Windows

In an effort to increase ventilation on the bus, bus windows may be opened (weather permitting) while students are on the school bus.

Physical Distancing

To the greatest degree possible, students will be physically distanced and placed in assigned seats on the school bus.

School Bus Cleaning and Disinfecting

Between each bus route (elementary, middle, and high school), WCS staff will disinfect high-touch areas.  Each night, the school bus will be sanitized and disinfected.

Grace and Understanding

Given the increased responsibility the district and drivers have in transporting students safely and when possible, physically distancing them on the school buses, we kindly ask that families extend to us a degree of grace and understanding during the opening weeks of school.  In the morning routes, it is possible that buses may be delayed in arriving at the bus stops or schools as we navigate through the new protocols and increased car rider traffic.

Additional Information

Bus stop safety is the most critical part of school transportation.  As such, we ask that a parent or parents be at the bus stop to keep children safe & enforce physical distancing.  It is important that students load safely and comply with all safety rules.  Please click on the link for an instructional video on YouTube regarding bus safety.  Additionally, please read through the information below so you can talk to your child about remaining safe while riding the bus.

Student training:

  • How to wear PPE

  • How to behave at the bus stop & exhibit physical distancing

  • How to board the bus & where to sit

  • How to behave while the bus is moving

    • Remain seated, cover your cough, do not touch others

  • What to do if you feel unwell

    • Notify the bus driver

Drivers must assign seats for accountability of students riding.  If there is a student who contracts COVID, assigned seats will assist in contact tracing.  Row/seat directly behind the driver and across the aisle will remain open, no seating of students.

Assess for Symptoms:

When leaving home to arrive at the bus stop, parent/guardian MUST assure student does NOT have any of the following symptoms:

  • A fever of 100.4 F or greater

  • Muscle pain

  • Cough

  • Headache

  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

  • Sore throat

  • New loss of smell and/or taste

  • Chills

  • Repeated shaking with chills

Parents/guardians must check their child’s temperature each morning & may NOT send their child to the bus with a temperature over 100.4 degrees.  If a student becomes ill while at school, the parent/guardian will need to pick up the student at school.

Bus Stop:

  • Students MUST wash hands thoroughly prior to arriving at the bus stop

  • Students should maintain physical distance while waiting at the bus stop

  • Parents/guardians should be at the stop to assist with physical distancing.

  • Students must wear a mask at the bus stop & on the school bus (unless there is a medical reason they cannot and a doctor’s note is on file).  Mask must cover nose & mouth.

  • Students should use hand sanitizer when boarding the bus (equipped on the bus).

  • When unloading at school, they must start with the front seat and work back, while staying 6 feet apart when exiting

Bus Operating Procedures:

  • No more than 2 students per seat

  • Siblings shall sit together

  • Limit the amount of times student are passing each other while boarding or exiting:

    • AM route, students load from the back to the front.  At school, they dismiss from front to back, maintaining physical distance.

    • PM route, students load according to bus stop, first student off in in front working back to last student off is in the back.

  • Exception is Pre-K through 1st grade

There will be automated hand sanitizers installed on every bus for students to use when they board & exit the bus.  Please instruct them on how to use it if needed.

All onboard, driver, aides, students must wear a protective mask while on board the bus.  Vents and windows will be open or cracked (in winter) to facilitate fresh air flow.
