Dear Wilmington Families,

The start of the 2018-2019 is in full swing, and our students and teachers are working hard at developing new friendships, growing as learners, and becoming critical thinkers.

I’m excited about the direction our District is taking and want to share a few highlights with you. This year WCS has implemented the following:

  • Enhanced counseling services at the middle/high school

  • A district-wide Prevention Coordinator provided by Solutions

  • A partnership with Solutions to provide an additional school-based therapist

  • Wilmington Success Academy - specifically designed to identify and help students who are at risk of not graduating

  • Alternative School and In-School-Restriction (ISR) classrooms on site - designed to implement interventions so that students can successfully re-enter school and not fall behind academically

  • Middle School schedule revision to increase instructional time in Core Academic Subjects

  • Grade Level Centers to provide unity, enhance our academic program, and create a strong foundation to prepare students for success in the secondary schools

  • K-1 tablet project

  • Virtual Reality / Google Expeditions project with WCS Foundation support

  • New website designed to improve parent/community access to school and district information

  • Placard Pick-Up process at our elementary buildings to increase student safety

I hope you’ll take a few minutes to learn more about these improvements in our New in 2018-19 news article.

The start of the school year required teamwork and persistence to adjusting to changes. With each passing day, we are experiencing improvements in efficiency with the arrival and dismissal process.  We have resolved many initial issues with transportation. We continue to assess our bus routes and parent pick up procedures. We are committed to finding permanent solutions that are in the best interest of our students. We will follow up in the coming week with communication to update you on these solutions.

I am excited about the many wonderful initiatives that are happening in our entire district and in our Wilmington Community.  I am impressed with how quickly all of our PreK-12 grade students have transitioned to the start of the school year. I look forward to our continued partnership as we work together to create the best learning environment for each and every one of our students.
